Attach a webcam to the thing too. So it turns on when the sprayer does... Much more fun to see the fox being soaked as well.

Thanks for the info re the github stuff - I'll check it out.

Feel free to use the diagram. Further to my ideas the web frontend and interface to mqtt are (at present) based on django. I hope to have some code out in the next week or so.

Enjoy LinuxConf!

Hi Dan, cool stuff! I don't know whether you've seen but there are "happenings" on github at the moment with a bunch of MQTT-enabled Perl scripts, and related modules for connecting through to Pachube etc - http://github.com/beanz is worth watching :-)

On a different note, would you mind if I borrowed your diagram to illustrate a talk I'm giving on MQTT at LinuxConf Australia 2011, with full credit of course? I want to show some of the ways that the technology (and mosquitto / rsmb) is being used.

Seems like you could set up the Arduino to use Pachube pretty easily, and with one of the mobile phone applications, or maybe jsut the dashboard app and some triggers you could control the watering system from your sofa.

Oliver,

Yes, I'd seen that page and it looks like a good option. Ultimately I'm trying to achieve is a way of adding devices (and of course controlling them) in an easy manner via the web frontend.

I have done some experiments in this area - it is possible to get the mosquitto python libs working with mod_python and maybe (I haven't tried) also mod_wsgi to build a web interface. Last time I tried there was a bug that nobody could track down that prevented it working on 64 bit installations not sure if it's still there.

I know you've looked at my experiments before but the one I'm referring to in this case is http://chemicaloliver.net/linux/a-simple-mqtt-to-websocket-bridge-using-mosquitto-and-pywebsocket/

Roger,

Yes, something like that. I may use one of the existing python MVP frameworks and see if any are suitable - a task for this weekend I feel.
